Where we work


Our History


JLR began in Ottawa in 1955 as a multidisciplinary civil/structural/mechanical/electrical engineering firm. Municipal planning was added a few years later. From the outset, the founders realized the value of offering a range of high-quality services across the public and private building science and civil municipal sectors. It set JLR apart from other, more specialized competitors in our original Ottawa/Eastern Ontario market area. As the firm grew, regional offices were opened in Sudbury and Kingston, our local presence in those cities allowing us to significantly  expand our market area. Early on, the founders saw the wisdom of offering share ownership to all our employees and, as the approach their retirement age, they eventually divested 100% of their ownership to the employees. More than two-thirds of our employees are shareholders.

In 1989, JLR added architecture to its range of services to round out building science group. We have worked hard to forge a fully integrated Architectural, Engineering, Planning and Project Management practice. Our success and growth are due to our track record of excellence, and our long list of satisfied clients with whom we have a continuing relationship. With a staff of 250, we now have offices in Ottawa, Sudbury, Kingston, Timmins, North Bay, Hawkesbury and Guelph.

In 2013, under the able direction of President Guy A. Cormier and Vice-president Steve Parenteau, JLR was among 50 Canadian firms to receive a prestigious Deloitte CIBC Canada's Best Managed Companies award. Now in our 60th year, we work across the nation and around the world.
