The Canadian Tire Centre is a multi-purpose arena located in Kanata, home to the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators, Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s, and National Basketball League of Canada’s Ottawa SkyHawks. Designed to accommodate over 19,000 spectators amassed in four levels of tiered seating, the arena hosts the majority of Ottawa’s concerts, hockey, basketball, skating, and other entertainment events. It is also home to the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame, and contains restaurants, bars, private suites, concession stands, a fitness complex, and several businesses.
Completed using a fast-track design and construction management format, this $170M facility was finished in less than 18 months, with our firm providing a complete range of mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering services including contract documentation and administration, and on-site inspection during construction.
Our firm provided design on $5M of infrastructure works including parking for 6,500 vehicles, a new 2,000 m section of Palladium Drive built to a four-lane urban arterial cross-section, 600 m of reconstruction of Terry Fox Drive to a four-lane rural arterial cross-section, and modifications to the intersection at Hazeldean Road and Terry Fox Drive. We designed specialized HVAC, lighting, power, life safety, and emergency systems to accommodate a variety of events under normal and emergency conditions. We also designed over 12 km of stormwater, sanitary, and water system piping, as well as a stormwater management facility to control quality and treat runoff from the entire site before discharging into the Carp River.
In subsequent years, our firm was contracted by Capital Sports Properties to complete routine visual reviews of the Canadian Tire Centre structure and facilities. In these reports, we offered itemized review findings and prioritized suggested repairs. Some of these efforts included review of as-built documentation, structural distress assessment, architectural wear review, and review of tenant spaces.
