Canadore College retained our firm to design a new campus that would provide educational services to small communities in and around Parry Sound, Ontario.
Originally designed to target LEED® Silver standards, the building contains numerous sustainable features including a high performance building envelope, radiant floor hydronic heating system, passive heating and cooling, exterior solar shading devices, minimum site disturbance, cement composite wall cladding, rigorous silt/erosion mitigation, and more.
Spatial proportions, building orientation, natural lighting, and earth materials such as cedar and natural stone provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Likewise, students enjoy a large cedar deck off the student lounge overlooking Briggs Lake, which offers a natural backdrop to the Boreal Forest for open-air graduation ceremonies and other social gatherings.
With an initial budget of $6.2M, the final construction cost of the project came in at $5.7M. In addition, polished concrete floors and efficient mechanical systems have reduced yearly operating and maintenance costs by more than $20,000.
