The Conseil scolaire catholique de district des Grandes-Rivières (CSCDGR) board serves northeastern Ontario along the Highway 11 corridor from Hearst to New Liskeard. With a highly successful scholastic program and a growing demand for expanded services in the Town of Cochrane, the board determined a need for a new Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 school, complete with a daycare.
The building was designed with the intention of creating a positive learning environment and maximizing the efficiency of shared spaces while maintaining the distinct elementary and secondary school programs. The school includes four JK/Kindergarten classrooms, 10 elementary classrooms, five secondary classrooms, six half-size secondary classrooms, and a woodworking shop.
The shared facilities of the school include an art/home economics room, science lab, music room, library, two special needs classrooms, and three computer labs. An oversized gymnasium — complete with independent change rooms, storage rooms, and offices — can accommodate up to 12 badminton courts, two volleyball courts, and a basketball court. A 12’ wide by 400’ long indoor track overlooks the gymnasium from a second floor, while a stage situated between the gym and cafeteria allows for performances to be conducted in either space.
The most daunting task presented to the design team was the schedule, which ambitiously required the building to be fully operational and ready for occupancy only 17 months after approval was given to commence design work. In order for this schedule to be met, the CSCDGR acted as its own Construction Manager, which allowed for design and construction activities to proceed in tandem with phased tender packages. Construction was successfully completed on time and within budget.
