Project Details

The new campus allows Canadore College the ability to provide educational services to small communities in and around the Parry Sound Area. The building was originally designed to target LEED® Silver standards (not certified), and includes sustainable features such as:

  • High performance building envelope
  • High performance mechanical equipment
  • Radiant floor hydronic heating system
  • Passive heating and cooling
  • Exterior solar shading devices
  • Natural day lighting
  • Energy efficient lighting and appliances
  • Smart building systems
  • Minimum site disturbance
  • Provision of endangered species habitat
  • Rigorous silt/erosion mitigation
  • The use of non-toxic materials
  • Cement composite wall cladding
  • Polished concrete floors

Polished concrete floors and efficient mechanical systems have reduced yearly operating and maintenance costs by more than $20,000. Spatial proportions, building orientation, natural lighting, and earth materials such as cedar and natural stone provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Students enjoy a large cedar deck off the student lounge overlooking Briggs Lake, which offers a natural backdrop to the Boreal Forest for open-air graduation ceremonies and other social gatherings. With an initial budget of $6,200,000, the final construction cost of the project came in at $5,700,000.
