The complex issue of domestic violence requires an equally comprehensive understanding of the shelter and services that are needed to help those dealing with violence and abuse. Centre Passerelle is a francophone service non-profit organization which is run by and for women, and is committed to ensuring the safety of all women and children in the community.
The intent of the design was first and foremost to create an environment that both meets the needs of women escaping violence and abuse, and makes them feel safe and secure in doing so. The layout provides rooms where privacy can be maintained, as well as common areas that are welcoming and non-intimidating.
The 4400 ft² shelter is located in a residential neighbourhood, contains 10 beds, and is fully accessible to people with disabilities. There are interior and exterior play areas for children, and added security features such as motion sensor lights and security cameras around the property to maintain the safety and peace of mind of guests.
The interior living spaces provide a comfortable and home-like atmosphere for guests, with warm colours and contemporary furnishings in an open-concept living/dining area filled with natural light. The work space for staff is separated from the living space, and includes a reception and interview area, as well as three private offices.
