This project comprised a new 5,200 m² facility within an existing broader campus. The Timmins campus houses trade program facilities, teaching/lecture rooms, computer labs, and administration space. The new facility was commissioned to meet the growing demand for Collège Boréal’s educational programs.
The new campus sees the consolidation of all the programs previously offered from a number of different sites into a single integrated facility. In addition, the curriculum has been expanded with an important new “shops” program to address the growing shortage of skilled trades in the region. The new state-of-the-art technical wing includes millwright, heavy duty mechanics and multi-purpose shops, as well as electronics and electrical labs.
While the project was out for public tender to contractors, JLR’s scope of work was expanded to include an additional 1,400 m² of classrooms for the Université de Hearst. An addendum was issued to add the shell of the university campus to the contract. The fit-up of the university campus was completed by change order.
The building was designed to LEED standards, using an integrated design approach with staff from our Timmins, Sudbury, and North Bay offices contributing to the project. Energy modelling by the JLR design team established energy reductions of roughly $40,000 per year. With an extremely challenging and compressed schedule, JLR issued deliverables on time and nearly $500,000 under budget.
