Project Details

Nordion is a world leader in producing radio-isotopes and radiopharmaceutical products for use in healthcare and medical diagnostics applications. In response to increased demand for radiopharmaceutical products used in treating various types of cancer, Nordion chose to fit-out a portion of their Kanata Radiopharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility. JLR was retained to provide prime consulting services for the design and construction of their new facilities, including architectural, mechanical, electrical, and structural disciplines.

The fit-out project included the construction of a series of class 10,000 and class 100 radiopharmaceutical production and component preparation areas, along with support and circulation spaces. Specialized ventilation systems were configured to ensure nuclear hazard containment, while maintaining clean rooms in compliance with FDA pharmaceutical production facility standards. The building infrastructure portion of the project included the fit-out of mechanical and electrical spaces, which featured the installation of a high pressure steam plant, a chilled water plant, a standby emergency power generator, and a new electrical service, complete with UPS backup systems.  All base-building services were sized to accommodate a planned expansion of the production spaces.

The construction phase was sequenced to accommodate the installation of process equipment and the completion of validation activities to ensure that FDA and CNSC regulatory approval milestones were met. The project was implemented through a construction management process, and was completed on time and in budget.
