Town of Espanola Community Improvement Plan
The CIP established a strategy for the revitalization of two commercial areas in Espanola, the downtown core and the Highway 6 corridor. It also provides tax assistance to support multiple residential, senior housing, or affordable housing projects within residential parts of project area.
The CIP was developed through a consultative process with a Project Advisory Committee and workshops with the public. Three workshops were held with members of Espanola’s business and residential development communities. As a part of the consultation process, potential project area improvements (before-and-after visualizations) were shown, and CIP incentive programs were discussed.
Incentives recommended in the CIP included assistance for façade improvements, signage, accessibility, parking and landscaping improvements, and architectural and engineering designs. There were also incentives added to rebate some municipal fees or provide tax assistance on renovations/upgrades associated with improvements.
We developed guidelines that built on Espanola’s strategic location along a transportation corridor, its community festivals, and Northern Ontario’s culture. The Highway 6 corridor offers opportunities for businesses to attract visitors and entice travelers to stop and support Espanola’s economy. As it is implemented, it is expected the CIP will bring additional and sustainable economic activity to Espanola.
The CIP was adopted by Council and the Town of Espanola continues to accept applications from local businesses and property owners.
