Project Details

In association with XCG Consultants Ltd., JLR completed preliminary and detailed design of a $25 million upgrade to Pembroke’s WWTP. The upgrades were based on recommendations contained in an EA Addendum, which was previously completed by the JLR/XCG team. The principal objective of this project was to implement secondary treatment protocols to meet Ontario Provincial Guideline F-5, as identified in an Environmental Study Report previously prepared by the city.

A Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) system was implemented.  The SBR is biological treatment process that removes non-settleable colloidal solids and increases stabilization and removal of organic matter and nutrients, such as nitrogen (ammonia) and phosphorus.  An ultraviolet disinfection system was installed to provide non-toxic effluent, in accordance with Provincial Water Quality Objectives.

Other major components of the project included a new mechanical raw water screening system, demolition of primary treatment tanks 1 and 2 and the old administration building, construction of an enclosure over primary treatment tanks 3 and 4 and the new SBR complex, a new administration building, a new sludge digester, a site-wide odour control system, replacement of the existing sludge dewatering belt press with two centrifuges, and implementation of a site-wide SCADA system.
