Client: Youth Entertaining Sudbury
Location: Sudbury, Ontario
Size: 120-capacity outdoor venue

Youth Entertaining Sudbury (YES) Theatre retained JLR to design a new outdoor theatre venue in downtown Sudbury. JLR’s design team collaborated with local artists, producers, and community leaders to create the YES Theatre Refettorio, a flexible and dynamic space capable of hosting a wide range of events and productions. JLR provided architectural services and mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineering services from design through contract administration and to project close out.

JLR’s architects worked on this infill project to transform an unused space in the heart of the city. The design consisted of a 120-capacity outdoor theatre with intimate seating, a thrust (open) stage that allows the audience to be close to the performers, and a building with concession, washroom, and tech booth. The theatre will be a key venue during the YES Theatre Summer Festival and will accommodate other events such as winter markets during the offseason. JLR also designed the venue so that it can be expanded onto the sidewalk, allowing for greater capacity.

JLR is proud to have been a partner on this project to create a new community hub that will advance the economic and artistic vitality of downtown Sudbury, and be a part of the vision to create a world-class arts and culture district in the city.
