JLR was retained to provide prime architectural and structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering services throughout the duration of the project from concept design to contract administration. The project involved undertaking an extensive 15,000 ft2 renovation to the third floor of the existing Sudbury Outpatient Care Facility. The new Cardiac Centre of Excellence (Centre) houses a number of services including echocardiography, halter monitoring, stress testing, a rapid access cardiology clinic, congestive heart failure care, a trans-catheter aortic valve implantation pre- and post-assessment clinic, and Ontario Telemedicine Network capabilities. The Centre was also designed to accommodate space for medical and nursing students.
The floorplan was divided into clinic spaces and pods for each of the doctors using the facility. The private pods incorporated an office, patient room, and reception area for each doctor. The administration section of the facility was located at the opposite end of the building to separate staff and patients.
The administration portion of the facility houses offices, locker rooms, washrooms and a high tech boardroom with video conferencing. The facility makes use of natural light throughout to enhance user comfort. Test rooms were equipped with blackout blinds to cut out sunlight during testing procedures.
