Gold Award of Merit Winners, 2019 Grand River Consulting Engineers Ontario Awards
Gold Award of Merit Winners, 2019 Grand River Consulting Engineers Ontario Awards

GUELPH – J.L. Richards & Associates Limited (JLR) is very excited to announce that the firm has been awarded a Gold Award of Merit for its work on the City of Brantford Environmental Services Administration Building & Vehicle Storage Garage. This honour was awarded by the Grand River Chapter of Consulting Engineers Ontario.

“We are very thankful for this recognition and for the opportunity to have been part of this project,” says Michael Troop, JLR Associate, Senior Environmental Engineer, and Manager of JLR’s Guelph office.

JLR was the Prime Consultant on this project, providing structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering, as well as architectural, planning, and contract administration services for the two-storey, 32,000 sq. ft. facility. Duncan Young, JLR Associate, Senior Structural Engineer, and Project Manager for this job, is quick to point out that the success of this project is certainly attributable to more parties than JLR alone.

“An important aspect of this project is that JLR, the owner, and the general contractor took a partnered approach to project delivery for this facility,” says Young. “We met regularly to evaluate progress and candidly address challenges together, which let all parties develop genuine rapport and authentic relationships.”

Young explains that this partnered approach allowed the project team to swiftly overcome on-site challenges, such as buried infrastructure, flooding risk, and difficult geotechnical conditions. While site conditions added to the complexity of the project, careful planning and coordination early on ensured that they were each fully addressed.

The building is located on the same site as the City’s existing water treatment plant. It is split into three major components: a multipurpose administrative building; a one-storey warehouse space; and a drive-through vehicle maintenance and storage garage with seven vehicle bays, including a designated wash bay.

Key building features include a reception area, offices, multipurpose administrative work spaces, customized departmental training rooms, boardrooms, a lunch room, locker rooms for outdoor-working staff, change rooms, mechanical and electrical service spaces, a pollution control laboratory, enclave rooms, and wellness rooms for diverse staff uses.

“We’re very proud of this project, and honoured to receive this award,” says Young.
