Kristin McCartneyOTTAWA – J.L. Richards & Associates Limited (JLR) is pleased to announce the addition of a new member to its Corporate Services leadership team. Kristin Johnson, CHRP, is the firm’s new Manager, Human Resources.

Johnson studied in Human Resources Management at Algonquin College, where she graduated with high honours and went on to earn her designation as a Certified Human Resources Professional. She joins JLR from the employee benefits sector, where she has spent the past four years employed as a Human Resources Generalist. However, she credits her background in service and hospitality for setting her on the path to this new role.

“In hospitality, I learned that I truly have a heart for service,” Johnson explains. “I use the skills I learned in that industry every day in my professional career. It’s crucial to fairly weigh multiple stakeholders’ perspectives to achieve a harmonious outcome, which is an important aspect of my work in HR today.”

Johnson has hands-on experience with long-term HR projects, such as developing policies and processes to streamline recruitment strategies, and establishing formal compensation systems for large organizations.

“In a past role, I was able to modernize recruiting processes, which resulted in a quantifiable cost reduction for the organization,” Johnson says. “I also led the complicated process of putting a formal compensation system in place, and tackled projects relating to health and safety, learning and professional development, wellness and engagement, and employee recognition.”
Johnson explains that, in all aspects of her work, she strives to focus on developing positive relationships between organizations and their staff.

“I am looking forward to refreshing and modernizing the HR function, while respecting JLR’s rich traditions,” says Johnson.

JLR looks forward to the insight and expertise that Johnson will contribute to the team, while she looks forward to learning the ins and outs of JLR’s operations.

“The first step for me will be observation; I want to come to a clear understanding of what’s already being done well before jumping in,” Johnson says. “After that, I’m looking forward to refining aspects of the HR function to support meaningful and impactful careers at JLR, with a focus on top-tier culture, engagement, and wellness.”
