JLR was retained by the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) under a standing offer agreement to provide multidisciplinary engineering and architectural consulting services for an upgrade project at Eramosa Public School in Rockwood, Ontario.
The first phase of the project was an engineering study that was completed in August 2022 comprising an initial site review by our multidisciplinary team, which documented the existing mechanical and electrical systems in the school, identified code and best practice deficiencies that were observed, and provided recommendations including budgetary costs to implement the various recommendations.
The second phase of the project was an Energy Screening Study which was completed in September 2022. This included an analysis of the energy consumption of the school and provided options for renewable energy technologies that could be considered at the school which were tied back to the recommendations from the initial engineering study. Some of the technologies that were reviewed include air source heat pumps, ground-source heat pumps, solar photovoltaic systems, and a solar wall.
Upon confirmation of the project scope of work, JLR proceeded to design which was completed in December 2022. UGDSB retained a Construction Manager for the project through a CCDC 5B agreement, and Substantial Performance was achieved in January 2024.
Prior to the project most of the building lacked a ventilation system, so JLR’s design aimed to improve air quality within the school by adding ventilation to all spaces. The mechanical scope of work on the project included the addition of three new rooftop units with air-source heat pumps, new ERV unit, new exhaust fans, new electronic building automation control system, new hydronic heating units, and modified plumbing services to serve the addition of a universal washroom and modified staff washrooms. The utilization of heat pumps resulted in an energy-efficient system that minimizes greenhouse gas emissions.
The electrical scope of work included an electrical service upgrade to support the new mechanical equipment, upgrades to existing fire alarm and signaling system, the replacement of emergency lighting fixtures, and upgrading all lighting fixtures through the school to be LED along with lighting controls upgrades to decrease energy consumption of the school.
The architectural scope of work for the project included the demolition of two existing washrooms and a storage room which were replaced by a new OBC compliant universal washroom and two staff washrooms. Half of the school ceilings were replaced to accommodate the new ductwork, and asbestos was removed. Minor roofing upgrades and various interior finish upgrades were also provided.
For this project, JLR received the 2024 ACEC Grand River Chapter Project Award, recognizing outstanding achievements in consulting engineering excellence and innovation.
