This project involved improvements to rehabilitate or reconstruct five sections of Guelph Line (totalling 10.7 km) to maintain a state of good repair and safe operation by improving ride quality; extending the life of deteriorated infrastructure (culverts, retaining walls, etc.); addressing drainage, geometric, and safety deficiencies; and adding shoulder paving for cyclists.
These goals were accomplished through a combination of measures including:
- Milling and resurfacing of the two-lane roadway
- Full depth reconstruction in areas where profile improvement, subgrade improvement, or culvert replacement was required
- Rehabilitation, repair, or replacement of four existing culverts/bridges plus two retaining walls
- Reinstatement of entrances (driveways) within the right-of-way
- Ditch and side slope regrading and erosion/sediment controls
- Checking for effective pavement surface drainage (i.e., through curves and intersections) and subsurface drainage
- Checking for adequate sight distance at intersections and entrances
- Installing new intersection traffic signals and illumination guide rail installations/repairs
- Shoulder repair and other miscellaneous repairs and improvements
The project also took advantage of the opportunity to enhance the natural environment through tree assessments/protection and watercourse improvements at culvert inlets/outlets, and to upgrade crossings per AODA requirements.
Once the design was completed, JLR provided contract administration and inspection services, monitoring all contractor activities and determining the need for provisional reconstruction of sections of the road to maximize the effectiveness of the reconstruction effort.
